Afrocontigbo

ÉMUME 2026 When We Move, We Remember– The Recap

What a night. From 5:30 to 8:30 PM at North High School in Minneapolis, Afrocontigbo brought the community together for a vibrant, high energy experience where the audience didn’t just watch; they danced, connected, and became part of the show.

From the very first piece, the room came alive. Explosions of color, grounded footwork, gyrations, and powerful storytelling captivated everyone from start to finish. Each performance flowed seamlessly into the next, creating a rich journey across Africa and the diaspora.

The program highlighted a wide range of cultural traditions:
Igbo dance forms rooted in community gatherings, celebration, and social connection
Gambian movement traditions shaped by drumming, polyrhythm, grounded footwork, and call and response
Togolese dance forms emphasizing rhythm layering, agility, ceremonial expression, and friendly battle
Southern African styles showcasing dynamic footwork and rhythmic precision
Caribbean influences bringing vibrant energy, storytelling, and diasporic connection

Our dynamic GOAT host carried the evening with humor, storytelling, and audience trivia, weaving each piece together with ease. With the support of Stage Manager Kia Johnson, the crowd stayed energized and involved, often joining in the movement themselves.

Playfulness and connection shined in the Senegambian and Togolese inspired works, where childhood games transformed into joyful dancing and friendly battles revealed rhythm, personality, and skill. Across the program, dancers explored identity, memory, and culture through traditional and contemporary styles including West African, Southern African, Caribbean, Afro Brazilian, and diasporic fusions. A beautiful children’s piece reminded us how culture flows across generations, while high energy performances kept the celebration alive.

The night closed in true Afrocontigbo fashion, with CEO Korma leading a collective dance that had the entire room moving and cheering, a powerful reflection of unity and shared joy.

This unforgettable evening was made possible by passionate instructors who led with vision, dedicated Afrocontigbo company dancers whose hard work brought each piece to life, and the committed community members whose love for African arts and culture continues to grow here in Minnesota.

More than a performance, this showcase was a celebration of culture, identity, and community, a reminder that when we move, we remember.
